the cheapest SSL certificates are about US$10 per year; the cheapest code signing certificates are about US$80 per year.
For small developers, the $70 difference is substantial.
Even for a large company where the code signing may be required only for internal use, it seems like a waste to purchase acode signing certificate when the company might already have an SSL certificate for its website.
Some options where Windows lets you create almost useless certificates tied to a single computer are quite a pain. Within the same company, one might have to create a certificate on each end user's computer and resign an application over and over.
Verisign and the company it purchased (Thawte) have very expensive code signing certificates. I am not sure if the Verisign and Thawte brand names are worth that much ... imo certainly not for casual and limited certificate use. IANAL. YMMV.
Any solutions to bring down the price of signing one's code?
